The Beginning of the Colony
Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn in 1681. He was an English Navy Commander who founded Pennsylvania when the king of England, King Charles II, granted him a massive amount of land in which, he settled the Quakers to freely have their religious beliefs. He having became a Quaker in England, went to the church that the community went to.They were called the Quakers or the Society of Friends. They were sponsored by King Charles II who owed the Penn family after they had loaned the King 16000 pounds. Penn's family didn't respect Penn the way they used to due to the fact that he was supporting the Quakers. He then became a Puritan and was kicked out of England. He first landed in New Castle Pennsylvania. They walked to Philadelphia the next day. There they started a large colony and began to start settling. The cost for 5,000 acres was 100 pounds. The cost of 100 acres was 40 shillings. The small colony soon became one of the largest. The people there began to take an interest in farming. The crops there grew the best.. This caused the other colonies to have to trade to them in order to get some of the richer crops. Through the farming economy Pennsylvania became one of the richest colonies in America. The colony started to come together over time and more and more people began to come from England to the so called "New World."
